Maximizing Space When Remodeling A Small Kitchen

Never underestimate the value of vertical space in small spaces, especially a space such as a kitchen where that space comes at a premium. Remodeling a small kitchen gives you a unique opportunity to ensure that every square inch of floor space gives you as much benefit as possible. The best way to do that is to find ways for each and every square inch to do as many single jobs as possible – hence stacking.

When you line your kitchen counters along one wall, you are given plenty of opportunities to do a great deal more with that available space. The countertop itself provides you with a work area. You may also have a variety of small appliances cluttering up your counters, and multitasking is the key to saving as much space as possible. For example, it is possible to find small coffee machines that have a grinder built in. That is one job taken care of. Now, what else can you do with that space as long as you are remodeling a small kitchen?

Let’s start beneath the countertop. There are several different opportunities here alone. You can use the area beneath the counter as cabinet space for storing food, cookware, or anything else that may be necessary. However, since you are doing a small kitchen remodel, you can always do something else with that space. For example, you can install an undermount kitchen accessory, such as an integrated dishwasher or compact refrigerator.

Now that the space beneath is taken care of, it is time to consider the space above. Here, your options are somewhat less limited. Ideally, you would use as much of this area as storage space. If you are aiming for a modern kitchen design, take the opportunity while remodeling a small kitchen to install glass-front cabinets with mirrored interiors and interior lights. This allows you to not only store your dishes, but to display them in style.

Of course, the wall is another opportunity just waiting to happen. You can install an additional shelf in the wall, such as a spice rack. Conversely, you could mount a towel hook, paper towel rack, or even hooks to hang up your pots and pans. Anything that can be hung can be safely stored here for easy access later on.

As you can see, the possibilities are endless when it comes to using your space efficiently. The idea is to come up with creative ways of remodeling a small kitchen to make use of every inch of available space, wall, ceiling, and floor. There may come a time in the future when even the ceiling can be used for additional purposes, but not quite yet.
